England's Euro 2020 dream ends in heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Italy

Gareth Southgate's side missed three penalties in the shootout after the match had finished 1-1 after extra-time at Wembley

Italy will now face Spain in the final on Sunday

England's hopes of winning a major trophy for the first time since 1966 were dashed in heartbreaking fashion as they lost 3-2 on penalties to Italy in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley.

The match had finished 1-1 after extra-time, with Luke Shaw giving England an early lead before Leonardo Bonucci equalised for Italy just before half-time.

In the penalty shootout, England missed three of their five spot-kicks, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all failing to convert their efforts.

Italy, meanwhile, were perfect from the spot, with Andrea Belotti, Leonardo Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi all scoring.

The defeat was a bitter blow for England, who had been dreaming of winning their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

It was also a cruel end to the tournament for Gareth Southgate's side, who had played with great heart and determination throughout the competition.

Italy will now face Spain in the final on Sunday, with the Azzurri looking to win their first European Championship since 1968.
